With the surrounding Bay area at The Cove widely recognised as the epicentre of the biotechnology industry, the development provides valuable additional space for companies in the life sciences industry. The car park is a cornerstone of the development and the aesthetic was a key factor in its design – the nine storey, 2000-space parking structure at The Cove is highly visible, facing out over the busy Oyster Point Boulevard.
However, the solar shading performance of the solution was also a key factor; particularly on the long, curving elevation on the south-facing side of the car park.
Two Levolux solutions were designed and supplied to achieve these project objectives:
- Infiniti Aluminium Aerofoil Fins with a patented secret-fix connection
More than 1,000 450mm x 85mm aerofoil fins were installed vertically, at a pitch of 900mm and in stacks of up to 19m (from the 2nd to the 9th storey). The fins were finished with a high gloss coating to a hazelnut colour, providing a strong contrast with Ligniti panels.
- Ligniti Aluminium Perforated Panel system.
Aluminium panels perforated with 9.5mm diameter circular perforations and finished with a metallic pewter grey coloured polyester powder coating. The perforation pattern was designed to achieve a 50% free area, providing important ventilation into and from the parking structure. The panels were installed to create a curved veil around the building. Programmable LED lighting provides a multi-coloured appearance to the façade at night time.
