Anodised Aluminium Box Fin Solar Shading Solution from Levolux

Levolux’s bronze anodised Infiniti Aluminium Box Fins were a perfect match for the glitz and glamour of the Pontio Arts & Innovation Centre in Bangor.

Levolux was approached to develop an external solar shading and screening solution at the Pontio Arts and Innovation Centre in Bangor. The Grimshaw-designed building houses a flexible mid-scale theatre, a studio theatre which holds up to 120 people, a 200-seater digital cinema, a cutting-edge Innovation Centre and the Students’ Union.

At the Pontio Arts & Innovation Centre, Levolux designed, supplied and installed its Infiniti Aluminium Box Fin system to south- and east-facing elevations, protecting the glazed façade from excessive glare and reducing solar gain internally.

The Infiniti 200mm x 50mm Aluminium Box Fin was installed vertically to provide solar shading on the east elevation. To compensate for the sloping site, the length of each fin was customised, increasing from 6m to almost 14m. The tapering array of fins, set at a pitch of 400mm, extends almost 75m across upper levels of the building’s east-facing elevation.

Levolux’s brief required a design that would allow the fins to cantilever 1400mm above the highest horizontal support, with the upper portion of the fins effectively functioning as a balustrade to the adjoining roof terrace.

The smaller Infiniti 150mm x 50mm Aluminium Box Fin was chosen for use over the glazed staircase and circulation areas. Not only did this option provide a financial saving, but it also permitted a greater passage of daylight into these areas.
The Infiniti fins were finished with a metallic bronze anodising to perfectly complement the building’s limestone cladding.

However, Levolux’s involvement in the renovation of the Pontio Arts & Innovation Centre did not stop at providing a solar shading solution. Levolux also designed, supplied and installed its Ligniti HP ventilation louvre system. The ‘Class A’ rated ventilation louvres, fixed at a pitch of 50mm, were backed with 50mm thick insulation (to moderate temperatures within plant areas) and HDPE bird mesh.

Single and double louvred doors facilitate easy access to the building services for routine cleaning and maintenance. The same high-performance ventilation louvre systems were also incorporated into two horizontal screens on the cinema roof. The louvred screens include hinged panels that can be opened to increase ventilation to roof plant areas. The Ligniti louvres were finished in a dark grey polyester powder coating.
