Infiniti Aluminium Aerofoil Fin Solar Shading System

Levolux designed, supplied and installed its Infiniti Aluminium Aerofoil fins at the £20 million purpose-built Belfast Harbour Studios – a facility constructed to shoot major film productions.

The three-storey building at the heart of the studio complex features floor-to-ceiling glazing along the 70 metre long west elevation. A solar shading solution was required to shield glazed openings from direct sunlight, particularly during the afternoon as the sun passes across the site.

Levolux engineered 400mm x 77mm aluminium aerofoil profiles that were installed vertically, spanning the 8.5m from the first floor level to the roof level. The fins are set at a pitch of 1500 mm and are fixed at an angle of 90 degrees from the façade. The Infiniti fins at Belfast Harbour Studios were finished with a silk grey polyester powder coated finish.

Levolux strives to provide value to its clients by solving technical problems, developing commercial solutions and managing technical risks. At Belfast Harbour Studios, Levolux was able to demonstrate this value by developing a number of bespoke design features to ensure the structural integrity of the system:

i. The stability of the fins placed between steel columns was ensured with an 8mm diameter stainless steel tensioned cable spanning between steel columns at 7.5m centres; and

ii. A bespoke bracket was also developed to secure the fins at roof level on the underside of the projecting canopy.
